New York City Saturday Contact Jam / Sunday Class
WHAT: JAM- Silent (no music) jam. Lots of dancerly dancers (as opposed to pure contact dancers) show up at this one. Lots of out-of-town dancers from around the world come too. Charlie Mosey runs this jam.
CLASS - Local teachers usually rotating on a monthly basis. Offered through Movement Research — more info at http://www.movementresearch.org/classesworkshops/classdescriptions/?class=ongoing.
WHERE: Eden's Expressway, 537 Broadway, 4th floor
The New York Monday Night Open Movement Jam
WHAT: This is advertised as an open music and dance jam, but the dancing is probably 65% – 75% contact improvisation. This is easily the largest space in NYC where people do contact improvisation. This jam moved on January 9, 2012, from its longtime location at the Children’s Aid Society on Sullivan Street. There is an Open Movement NYC Facebook page that contains updates and some community postings.
Bill Young Studio Tuesday Contact Lab / Monday Contact Class / Wed Contact Jam
WHAT: TUESDAY LAB- “Working Group” or “Lab Group,” at Bill Young’s Studio. People come with suggestions of things to work on, and then the group decides together on what to work on for the evening. Often (but not always) very small. Run by Edwin Adkins. WEDNESDAY JAM- There is music mostly from what people bring on their iPod. Sometimes also live music. Small, intimate, often very focused jam. Charlie Mosey runs this jam.
WHERE: 100 Grand St. (b/tw Mercer & Greene), 2nd floor (Buzzer B), SoHo, Manhattan, NYC, 7pm – 9:30pm
Weekly Friday CI class
WHAT: Kayoko Nakajima teaches this weekly contact improvisation class
Second Sunday Underscore
WHAT: Monthly Underscore practice. The Underscore is basically a structured group contact improvisation experience. The dates are sometimes a bit random; join the Facebook group “Underscore NYC” to get updates. People who have not attended an Underscore talk-though before should get one before attending the Underscore. The next Underscore will be a special Global Underscore on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at 9:30am. Additional Underscores on July 8 and August 12 (2012)
Open Music Circle
WHAT: All movers and shakers are cordially invited to dance to the sounds of the acoustic improv musicians at the Open Music Circle, now seven years old! We meet regularly in Manhattan and occasionally in Brooklyn . There is no structured agenda and no director. We all sit in a circle or semi-circle and start with silence. Then someone begins to play or sing or move. Then we watch, listen to each other and, when we want, begin to play, vocalize or move as we wish, and so it goes. Finally we end the evening with silence.
